Historically, the Palace of the Governors’ front porch has been a place of commerce and trade, dating from the Palace’s initial use as an official, public building in 1610. Today, the Native American Artisan Program, under the auspices of the Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum, is a New Mexico Indian-only marketplace, as well as a cultural outreach, preservation and education program officially created in 1976 and jointly administered by its Native participants and the museum. It is considered a model program and jewel of the New Mexico State Museum system. |
