Santero of the Mountain Village Crucifixes
Active 1820-1830

Crucifixes by the unidentified santero of the Mountain Villages Crucifixes tend to be small in size. This unidentified santero worked in the high mountain villages of Córdova, Truchas, Taos, and the surrounding area north of Santa Fe. His works are not plentiful but there are enough to establish an original style. His Christ figures tend to have serene faces with closed elliptical eyes with torsos that are short and thick. Wounds are deep and well developed with gesso and loincloths are often decorated with floral and abstract designs.
