15th Annual Fred Harvey History Weekend

The 15th Annual Fred Harvey History Weekend in New Mexico takes place October 24th-28th.

Don’t miss your chance to:

  • Attend engaging Harvey History Talks at the New Mexico History Museum (or online) on Friday and Saturday afternoons, October 25th & 26th.
  • Enjoy a historically delicious Fred Harvey Foodie Dinner & Auction at the La Fonda Hotel Ballroom on: Saturday night, October 26th.
  • Participate in other exciting events throughout the weekend.

Net proceeds benefit the New Mexico History Museum, specifically projects concerning Fred Harvey, the Santa Fe Railway, and the cultural, culinary, architectural, and economic history of the Southwest.

Friday, Oct. 25 NMHM Lecture Schedule:

11:30am-Doors open for pre-ticketed check-ins and seating

                 (All seats must be pre-reserved. No tickets will be sold at the door)

12:00 Introduction by Meredith Schweitzer

12:10: #Fred15 A mini documentary by Katrina Parks

12:30: The Harvey Revival and 15 Years of FredHeadery, lecture by author Stephen Fried marking the 15th year of Fred Harvey History programming in Santa Fe, the 50th anniversary of the revival of interest in all things Harvey, and the 150th anniversary of the beginning of Fred’s railroad restaurant and hotel empire. Will include previously unknown material from the late J. Stewart Harvey, Jr. and Byron Harvey III.

Followed by a conversation with Harvey Weekend founders Fran Levine, Jenny Kimball, Meredith Schweitzer, Katrina Parks, Daggett Harvey, Jr. and others.

2:00 pm: Wimmer Prize presentation, Kathleen Dull (NMHM), and update on the Fred Harvey online research tools from the Chavez Library site.

2:45: Our Aunt Mary Colter: Reminiscences and Never-Before-Seen Collectibles from the Legendary Fred Harvey Designer’s “Second Family” in Minnesota, the Larkins: Q&A with Smithsonian docent Lindsay McAuliffe (in-person) and her sister Lucy Noonan (via zoom), granddaughters of Lou and Arthur Larkin, in whose Minneapolis home Mary Colter spent her summers. Lou Larkin and daughter Martha Larkin Noonan travelled to Santa Fe after Colter’s death to take care of her house and estate. First look at the pieces Colter gave the family during her life and left them in her will, and new Colter correspondence. Followed by a dialogue with Colter experts architect Barbara Felix, Allan Affeldt, and Matt Kluge.

4:00 How the Santa Fe Reading Rooms and the Harvey Book Business Taught the West to Read Suzanne Stauffer, professor emerita LSU on the ATSF Reading Rooms, the FH book business, and their impact on American literature and women’s education (based on her 2023 paper “Correct Provisions can be Made for Their Wants: The Reading Rooms of the Santa Fe Railroad”)
