Call for Zozobra Memories and Objects for Community Exhibition at New Mexico History Museum The tradition of Zozobra turns 100 this August and New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) is telling this ten-decade story in the recently reopened Palace of the Governors. The Museum needs community help to bring this history to life. What: Old Man Gloom’s demise has been one of Santa Fe’s most iconic celebrations since its inception in 1924, offering an annual opportunity for emotional and spiritual cleansing through the torching of worries. Please join Dr. Thomas E. Chavez, Former Director, Palace of the Governors Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Former Executive Director, National Cultural Hispanic Center, for a "repeat performance" ON-LINE talk originally presented by Southwest Seminars on May 5, 2003., as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series. Chavez discusses Captain Gaspar Pérez de Villagra and his narrative epic poem, Historia de La Nueva Mexico, which focuses on the early days of Juan de Onate’s 1598 expedition to colonize northern New Mexico.

The Legacy of the Santa Fe Internment Camp Historical Marker

The New Mexico History Museum, in partnership with the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League, presents the third in a series relatedto the internment of Japanese males who were arrested and incarcerated at Santa Fe, one of New Mexico’s four Department of Justice (DOJ) internment camps during WWII. This event is Free With Museum Admission, thanks to generous funding from the New Mexico Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the JACL Legacy Fund Grant.

After five years of rehabilitation work at the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) Palace of the Governors, the Museum presents “History Homecoming: Past, Present, Palace” on Sunday, April 21, 2024, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This free community event celebrates the hard work in making this beloved landmark brighter than ever, and will included interactive experiences, cultural art performances, demonstrations and new exhibits inside the Palace.
